Description
Villa Paridiso lies on the west coast of the Caribbean Island of Nevis. The beaches are well protected from the prevailing wave climate from the Atlantic but are susceptible to hurricane damage. Hurricanes Luis, Hugo and Lenny have all resulted in significant shoreline recession which has removed significant beach material from the shoreline. During the past 20 years Nevis has experienced a rapid growth in tourism particularly on the more benign west coast.
This has been accompanied by an increase in the number of buildings including hotels, holiday villas and restaurants adjacent to the coast. Property owners are now having to evaluate the risks associated with shoreline recession to their business.
Scope of Work
JYA Ltd (now Edenvale Young) was appointed to undertake a feasibility study to assess the impact of erosion / shoreline recession on the Villa Paridiso property. The study included:-
Assessing the geomorphology and geology of Pinney's beach with respect to the Nevis Government coastal development set back rules.
Reviewing the Nevis beach monitoring programme as applied to the Villa Paridiso site to assess the magnitude of shoreline recession.
Making preliminary engineering proposals to mitigate the loss of beach material in front of the property.
