Description
Edenvale Young Associates was asked to develop a hydrodynamic model of the River Orwell and the Dock at the transition to the River Gipping within Ipswich. This modelling forms part of the FRA (prepared by Faber Maunsell) for the proposed University Campus Suffolk Phase 2 (Orwell Quay) development.
The objective of the modelling was to focus on the overland flow routes, flood extents, depths and velocities of water during low probability (extreme) events to inform the Flood Risk Assessment with respect to flood depths, velocities and hazard. .
Scope of Work
The key processes within the scope of works were:-
An assessment of the water level fluctuations in the Orwell including the development of a combined tidal and surge time series to form the model boundary.
-
The construction of a 2-dimensional TUFLOW model representing the river, dock and possible out of bank flow routes and attenuation.
-
Modelling and reporting of the results of a number of return period and climate change scenarios to assess the impact of the development, breaching and dock gate operation.
