Description
Barrow Borough Council in conjunction with Westlake Urban Regeneration Company appointed ABP Mer and Edenvale Young (then JYA Ltd) to undertake the development of an SFRA for the borough. The area covered by Barrow Borough Council is on the Furness Peninsula on the Cumbrian coast of the UK.
The centre of Barrow was considered to be a high risk of tidal inundation with over 1,800 properties identified as being vulnerable and within the EA's high flood risk mapping area. However, this estimate was based upon projecting the 1 in 200 year and 1 in 1,000 year return period sea water levels inland and took no account of the topography of the area including the presence of a rail embankment. The Long Embankment adjacent to cavendish Dock currently protects Barrow-in-Furness from tidal inundation. A breach analysis was undertaken for both return periodsusing TUFLOW to assess the influence of the topography on the flood risk to the town. These analyses resulted in a significant reduction in the number of houses potentially at risk from tidal inundation.
