Description
Barrow Borough Council in conjunction with Westlake Urban Regeneration Company appointed ABP Mer and Edenvale Young (then JYA Ltd) to prepare the development of an SFRA for the borough. The area covered by Barrow Borough Council is on the Furness Peninsula on the Cumbrian coast of the UK.
The borough has a number of potential rural and urban flooding problems. Barrow in particular is at risk of both tidal inundation and fluvial flooding with over 1,800 properties identified as being vulnerable by the EA. The SFRA was divided into two phases. Phase 1 included collating data, identifying flooding problems and developing a strategy for the future. The consultations and work undertaken for Phase 1 identified four key issues relating to flooding in Barrow-in-Furness which were of critical importance.
Phase 2 of the SFRA included the construction of an ISIS model of the Poaka / Mill Beck to assess the risk of fluvial flooding to Barrow in Furness; re-evaluation of extreme tidal water levels at the Port of Barrow; the construction of a TUFLOW model to assess the impact on flooding as a result of breaching the Long Embankment (sea defence) and revising the Flood Risk Mapping for Barrow-in-Furness based upon the results of the modelling..
