Martin gained his BSc in mathematics and went on to complete a doctorate in Atomic and Molecular Physics. Following several years of research, Martin has spent the majority of the last 25 years working for the Environment Agency (EA) in the fields of Flood Warning and Flood Forecasting.
Martin was responsible for the design, implementation and on-going development of the respected CASCADE Flood Warning system in the Thames Region of the EA. From the development of this system he gained considerable experience in the areas of real-time telemetry collection and display, handling and use of radar rainfall, flow forecast modelling and flood warning, incorporating these ideas into a unified product.
One of Martin’s particular interests is the use of radar rainfall in flow modelling and various techniques employed to improve the quality of the radar based information to provide better Flood Forecasting models. More recently Martin’s experience was employed in a consultative capacity when the Thames Region of the Environment Agency was implementing the National Flood Forecasting System and Regional Telemetry Systems.
While working for the EA he was involved in implementing Edenvale Young’s GeoGUI in the Thames Region. Martin has two other work related passions: the archiving of data for future use and concern that research products are implemented in an operational capacity. He was instrumental in ensuring a unique 22 year archive of radar data was built up and several radar based research projects was incorporated into the CASCADE system.
