Claire Bailey's Blog from Atutur Hospital in Uganda

Atutur

Claire Bailey, one of our graduate engineers is spending three weeks in Uganda with Engineers for Overseas Development (www.efod.org.uk) working at the Atutur Hospital in the Kumi Region. She writes

We arrived in Uganda on Wednesday evening (15 September 2010). One of the drivers from the Mott MacDonald office in Kampala picked us up in the morning and took us got the bus station in Kampala to get the bus up to Kumi (where we area staying) the buses don't leave until they are full so we had to wait about an hour and a half for it to fill up, it was quite a long journey and the roads were as bumpy as I remember from last time.

We met Fred the contact at Atutur hospital yesterday, and talked about how things were going at the hospital and what other work might need doing in the future apart from making the finishing touches to the waste incinerator which was built last year. We also had a look at the incinerator compound to see how things were. Today we have been to the medical waste at the incinerator in Atutur to check that it is functioning correctly which in general it was.

There are a couple of bits to add that there wasn't time for last year, to add some restraining rods to hold down the metal top plate to the base which should hopefully stop of the the cracking of the cement on the sides. The roof was made of very thin sheeting before and the heat has already made it wear thin so we are going to add some thicker sheets over the top, and include a detail around the chimney to stop the rainwater running down it onto the top of the incinerator. This afternoon we are going to travel to Soroti, to look at the incinerator there which was built 5 years ago, and from what we've heard is falling apart! So we will see how that goes and work out what needs doing there.

Gerald joined the Edenvale team in 2004 on a work placement and graduated this summer with a degree in civil and architectural engineering when he formally joined Edenvale Young. Gerald has been granted sponsorship from Edenvale Young, and Great Western Research and Bath University. He will be starting his PhD this October. Gerald's PhD is related to the overtopping and breaching of coastal flood defenses using numerical methods and modelling.

Edenvale Young's Computer Systems (Sep 08)

Gerald Morgan

Edenvale Young's computer systems are under constant review but 2008 has seen a significant improvement. This includes the purchase of a high specification multi-core machine dedicated to ISIS-TUFLOW modelling and the addition of 4 Tbytes of storage. This gives us the capability of running a large number of complex models in parallel. We have also upgraded our back-up and failure systems to ensure security of data and are imlementing a migration from single screen monitors to duel screen systems.

Environment Agency North West (Jul 08)

Edenvale Young has recently been commissioned by the EA to update 18 flood map updates in the North West region. Over the course of the next 6 months Edenvale will be generating 18 models and performing 18 flood mapping exercises for a set of small streams in and around Manchester.

Environment Agency Wales - Training (Feb 08)

Environment Agency Wales - Training

In Feb 08 the EA sent three attendees from the EA's offices in Cardiff to attended a 2 day course on TUFLOW and ISIS TUFLOW. Peter Aylett who has been running our training programme since 2007 worked with the EA attendees to develop their understanding of ISIS-TUFLOW using tutorials that have been developed in house. The course was then structured to build a basic TUFLOW model as a working example which the attendees were planning to work on following the course for the River Ely and River Clun.

CIWEM River Modelling Conference (April 2008)

North Western and North Wales Region

Chris Whitlow, Peter Aylett and Maria Jarquin were invited to speak at CIWEM's conference on hydrology and river modelling which took place in Manchester this April. The Edenvale team gave a combined presentation discussing experiences in Urban Flood Modelling with case studies in Manchester: Chorlton Brook, Birmingham: River Rea and Northwich: River Weaver. Edenvale received excellent feedback back from CIWEM on the success of Edenvales presentation.

Expansion of Edenvale Young (March 2008)

Expansion of Edenvale Young

Chris Whitlow and John Young joined forces and launched Edenvale Young Associates Ltd in 2006. Since that partnership Edenvale Young has successfully combined their skills, expertise, knowledge and technical resources to create a successful and ever growing international business.

Edenvale Young in 2007 launched the start of their seminar series which has proved to be a great success with future seminars and partnerships planned for 2008/09 Edenvale still resides in The Wool Hall, Bristol but has moved offices within the building to accommodate it's ever expanding work force which has recently been joined by Dan Piggott as a graduate engineer.

ISIS User Group Meeting (Feb 2008)

February 2008 Edenvale Young built on the success of their previous seminar by partnering with Halcrow to hold a 1 day event in Bristol showcasing, Halcrow's ISIS software. This ISIS User Group Meeting was aimed at ISIS community and had a monumental attendance of over 85 delegates. Informative and compelling presentations where given from Edenvale Young, Halcrow, Capita Symonds, and Black and Vetch. This meeting allowed the end user to gain and share ideas, learn from the experiences of other modellers, to influence ISIS development and to network with fellow modellers.

TUFLOW Seminar Series (Nov 2007)

An Introduction to Two Dimensional River and Coastal Modelling using TUFLOW and Tuflow UK User Group Meeting

Seminar Series

In November 2007 Edenvale Young launched their seminar series which partnered with ARUPS and BMT WMB. EVY hosted a 2 day TUFLOW event in Bristol which was attended by over 100 delegates.

Bill Syme, the TUFLOW author and manager gave a 1 day presentation about the pros and cons of 2D modelling the importance of dynamically linking with 1D channel and pipe networks and the capabilities of TUFLOW. Bill's presentation covered the data requirements for 2D modelling, how to set up a "D model from scratch using layers of GIS data, including examples from the UK and Australia. Bill gave an enthusiastic and interesting presentation and shared his views on the future challenges for river and coastal modelling.

Day two was promptly followed with the informative TUFLOW - UK User Group Meeting which included presentations from Edenvale Young, Halcrow, Jeremy Benn, Capita Symonds and the Environment Agency. This meeting engaged in a question and answers session which allowed free discussion and proved to be a great success.
